Design Experience

Theatre Designer

Demi DiCarlo is a theatre-maker and a storyteller. Design, a newfound love of hers, is one of the best ways to help tell a story in theatre. Demi is a quick learner and brings passion and enthusiasm to every opportunity she gets.

Lighting Design

A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare.

The concept for this production was the Hartford Circus fire of 1944. In the wake of a tragic event, the characters of the play use comedy to cope with their grief. The production was full of whimsy, magic, love, and heart.

Demi was nominated for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival for this design and won the award for Achievement in Lighting Design.

Design for the Theatre Class

Demi took a Design for the Theatre class during her time at Salem State University and fell in love with it. She was so excited about learning a new side of theatre-making that she volunteered for the lighting design project above.

She learned the basics of Costume, Lighting, Scenic, and Sound Design, as well as color theory and the design elements of line, shape, and texture.

The scenic design project consisted of designing three different sets for No Exit by Sartre: a realistic set, a stylized set, and metaphorical set. The realistic and stylized sets are both takes on a photography studio. The stylized one leans more into the motif of the play about the characters only being able to see themselves through other’s eyes. The metaphorical set features three projection flats that depict social media feeds about the three characters. This is a modern interpretation of the play’s theme that “Hell is other people.”

The costume design project is for the characters of the short play Rain by [insert playwright here]. It is set in the late 1980s during a drought on a family’s farm. Demi researched period accurate clothing and took great care with choosing color palettes and silhouettes for each character.

Costume Design

Student Theatre Ensemble’s Haunted Circus fundraiser event.

Demi co-directed and costume designed a circus-themed haunted house event. Characters included a Ringmaster, a demented clown, a Magician and her Assistant, a Lion Tamer and her human animals, Acrobats, and tour group plants that joined the clown by the end.

On a limited budget, Demi ordered and put together the costumes for this student event.
